Even more disturbing is the thought that young people are at increased risk of suicide than most of the population. According to the American Association of Suicidology, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24. This same age group also attempts suicide at an alarmingly high rate - 100 to 200 attempts for every successful suicide.
Experts at Cambridge University note several reasons why students are vulnerable to suicidal thoughts or may even consider suicide a viable way to solve a difficult situation. College students may feel pressure to meet family expectations of success, and going away to college can be a daunting and lonely experience, especially if there are few friends who may attend school at the college or university.
Resorting to alcohol or drugs to cope may further push someone into a downward depressive cycle, and coping with the loss of an important relationship or excessive stress can act as a trigger. And students who have a history of mental illness or a previous suicide attempt are at significantly higher risk than students without those factors.
Even though the reasons behind a suicide attempt are complex, there are ways to identify someone who may be in a serious depression and get them the help they desperately need.

INSTRUCTIONS

-->
It is crucial to know the signs that someone is thinking of suicide, including the following as listed by the American Association of Suicidology:
- Sudden change in moods - someone who is normally cheery and talkative may seem withdrawn and hard to talk to. The mood may come and go for quite some time, but the person would also appear to spend longer lengths of time in the "withdrawn" stage.
- Alcohol and substance use/and or abuse.
- Feeling that life has little purpose or that someone is unable to find a reason to continue living.
- Increased anxiety and inability to sleep.
- Increased interest in death and exploring how others feel about death.
- Giving away treasured items or making plans to dispose of assets or possessions.
If there is a question about whether or not someone may be seriously depressed enough to commit suicide, it is best to err on the side of caution and seek help for them as soon as possible.

-->
Ask the person if they are considering suicide. While this can be uncomfortable for most people, it is often a critical step. The individual may have been considering suicide for some time but is afraid to admit it.
It is important to use the word "suicide" during the conversation. Although most people think that using this phrase will "put ideas in someone's head," mental health and suicide hotlines disagree. In reality, talking directly yet empathetically about suicide can have the opposite effect.
Instead of closing a door, the direct approach encourages open communication and can even help someone acknowledge the feelings and thoughts they have been considering.

-->
Offer to help. Even if your friend is not willing to admit that he or she is considering suicide, offer to help find options. The National Suicide Prevention Lifelinehas trained volunteers and counselors who can help locate programs in the local community where someone can seek counseling.

-->
Be willing to intervene if someone is not willing to get help for themselves. This step is often the most difficult, especially when young people or students are involved. Young adults may display some of the signs of suicide at one time or another, and friends or family may feel that intervention is too harsh of a step.
If someone is in immediate risk of suicide, it is critical to take action. If a suicide attempt is in progress, call 100 to get professional assistance as quickly as possible. Give the dispatcher details.
Did the person take pills or take some type of legal or illegal drug? Is the person conscious? What if the person is threatening suicide, but has not taken any steps yet? Go ahead and contact 100 and ask for a mental health team to be dispatched with local law enforcement, sheriff, or possibly even ambulance.
If the person has a weapon, let the emergency dispatcher know this as well. Police especially will want to know the type of situation they may encounter when they arrive on the scene. Acting quickly and decisively is the best way to get someone help at this stage.

-->
Stick with it. Recovery from a suicide attempt or helping someone who is undergoing treatment for suicidal thoughts takes time. It is not uncommon for the young adult to push people away or even blame others for his or her situation. During this phase, it is more important than ever to stay supportive.
If possible, participate in the student's therapy. While therapy sessions are confidential, the therapist may encourage the student to have friends or family participate in group sessions or even open sessions in order to gain insight into how the person is progressing outside of the therapy sessions.

CBSE schools in Goa unhappy over optional board exam
PANAJI: Parents and teachers of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in Goa are less than happy over the Union Human Resources

Development (HRD) ministry's decision to make standard X board exams optional for the schools. They feel that the decision will result in students taking their exams 'casually' and no accountability could be fixed for poor performance.
"It is the government of India's decision. But if we are asked, we would say no to the new rules," says principal of the Navy Children's school at Chicalim. "We need to see the guidelines on the criteria to decide on what basis students will be taken in the various streams after standard X. Standard X is the checking point for students. That is where they decide which stream they will get into."

A teacher from a CBSE school in the state said, "If 20 students in the class want to answer the standard X exams and other 20 do not want to. It will be difficult to handle the class." The school authorities say that a majority of their parents are not in favour of the new system and that they are 'apprehensive' of its resulting consequences.

A parent of a CBSE school in the state, R Vijayan said, "If the grading system is implemented the child will not show interest and if the child does not show interest teachers will also lose motivation. Then there will be no accountability. Anytime anything goes wrong, the child will threaten that he will not answer his board exams."
Of the seven CBSE schools in Goa, four are governed by the autonoumous body Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathana and two others by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, both of which run several CBSE schools across the country. The school heads in Goa are hoping that their main offices will draw guidelines for implementation of the HRD ministry's new decision helping them to make a smooth transition.
But the schools grew anxious on Tuesday as they are yet to get any intimation with regards to the new law and more so because their expectations that the new rules will be implemented for the 2011 board exams were shattered by reports. Reports on Tuesday indicated that the grading system for class X examination will come into effect right away and will be in place for the 2010 CBSE board exams. Reports stated that a formal announcement of this just a few days away as the proposal for the option found general approbal at the high-powered Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), in New Delhi on Monday.

Instead of board examination, stress will now be placed on comprehensive and continous evaluation system so that education standard do not suffer. V P Mishra, principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya II at Vasco, said, "Students will take their studies casually as everyone will be declared passed. And in case of professional courses where every mark matters how will it be decided who gets admissions and who does not if the grading system is introduced. Performance of the students will not count."

Principal of another CBSE school in the state, R Chellamuthu, said, "There is concern over the new rules. But if the whole nation is going to follow it, we cannot object. We will have to try hard to maintain our standards." A parent stated, "We will lose control over the child. This system will not work in India where education is still the means to ensure a job. The syllabus should have been revamped instead by the HRD ministry to make it more logic based."
In the meantime, Goa alongwith Manipur, West Bengal, Orissa, Meghalaya, Tripura and other states has made a representation to the HRD minister Kapil Sibal that it is not in favour of making the std X exam optional for schools governed by the state boards, which are a majority in Goa.

Representatives of these states said that a single board system with uniform curriculum would dilute the sense of ownership among the teachers in the states and that it would interfere in preserving the language, script and culture of the states.
More Stories from this section
CM asked to file report card on his ministers

Home Site 1 | Site 2 | Sample Papers CBSE

Physics CBSE 12th Career & Importance

Home Site 1 | Site 2 | Sample Papers CBSE

Physics At 10+2 CBSE

The two leading qualities of a physicist are curiosity and an analytical mind. Physics is one of the subjects of study both at the 10+2 and B.Sc levels.

Those who want to take up engineering and technology course after 10+2 must study Physics (of course, along with mathematics). The cousin content of many engineering and technology courses include a substantial portion dealing with the basics of physics.
At the B.Sc. level, several universities offer honors degree programmes in physics.
At the first degree level some universities have introduced courses in electronic sciences (BES) or B.Sc (Electronic Science). There are also stray examples of universities offering such subjects as Astrophysics, Biophysics as one of the combinations at the B.Sc level.

Those who want to take up the career as Physicist (researchers or teachers) should stay the postgraduate (M.Sc) course and continue further to obtain doctoral degree. There more than 115 universities which offer M.Sc (Physics) course.

M.Phil and PhD courses are available both in universities as well in a number of research institutions. A joint entrance screening test (JEST) is conducted for admission to PhD programs in physics at 13 research institutions.

Engineering and technology are build on the fundamental of Physics , which covers many specialized fields – from engineering , architecture, cinematography, acoustics, astronomy, and astrophysics to medicine , agriculture, geophysics, meteorology , and other allied sciences.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) has also been set up under the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram, for the study of integrated masters in applied sciences, and postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral programs in space science.

Physics can be applied to many industries and engineering problems as the subject helps to develop in you skills such as logical thinking, computing and problem solving, which are useful for any field of work, or organization.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

If you are an explorer, one who likes to see other parts of nature that few others have seen, naturally like to take things apart, and spend time over details, these are good indicators for a career in physics.

Good career opportunities for qualified physicists are available both as teachers and researchers. For teaching jobs in universities and colleges, one has to qualify in the UGC – CSIR NET. Every year a large number of candidates are recruited by several research institutions.

Laboratory Assistant: This job revolves around taking care of the laboratory and its equipment. The lab-assistant arranges instruments and apparatus foe various experiments to be conducted in the lab. A PG Diploma in Medical Lab Technology would be better option though.

Scientific Assistant: A scientific assistant works under a scientist and may have responsibilities like recording routine readings of instruments , scanning books, internet and journals for reference material , compiling working notes , etc.

Forestry: Science graduates are eligible for the post of Forester and Forest Ranger. Candidates qualifying in the written test and fulfilling prescribed physical requirements are sent to the Indian Forest Research Institute and College at Dehradun or Coimbatore for a 2-year training course in Forestry.

Defence Services: Science graduates and postgraduates who meet the prescribed physical and medical requirements and clear the entrance tests are eligible for appointment in the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Air Force, and in the Defence Science Service.

Other Entry Occupations: Physics graduates can always try for other options open to graduates for all streams. These include various competitive exams, government jobs, subordinate executive and clerical posts, etc.

Sales: Science graduates are specially suited for sales f commercial products like pharmaceuticals, scientific instruments, biotechnology products, etc. Medical representations are hired by all pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturers for promoting and marketing their products to doctors and hospitals.

Apprenticeship: Many industrial undertakings recruit science graduates for paid apprenticeship in the chemical, mechanical, or other relevant engineering department. They are paid a stipend during training and may afterwards be absorbed in the factories and laboratories.

Management Trainees: On the basis of a selection test and interview, many business houses employ promising science graduates as management trainees. On successful completion of training, they are employed as executives.

A degree in Physics can start you on a career in research and the building of knowledge in any particular area of subject. Most students of physics work in research and development, engineering, and information technology fields. Some physicists work on problems at the frontier of knowledge, in fields such as nuclear physics, astrophysics and so on. The main areas of research in physics include astronomy and astrophysics, condensed matter physics and material science.

Reference : CBSE.nic.in

Home Site 1
